Hiring Heroes Career Fair

By Donna MilesAmerican Forces Press ServiceWASHINGTON, Sept. 13, 2005 - Severely wounded servicemembers and all military spouses are encouraged to attend a "Hiring Heroes Career Fair" Sept. 20 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, to explore job opportunities in the federal government and private sector. The fair, similar to one held earlier this year at Walter Reed Army Medical Center here, represents one of many steps the Defense Department is taking to help wounded troops transition to productive, satisfying civilian careers, Mark Smith from the Defense Civilian Personnel Management Service told the American Forces Press Service.Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has expressed the department's continued commitment to taking care of wounded troops and easing their transition to civilian life, and helping them find jobs is an important step in that effort, Smith said."If we can't find them a job in DoD, we'll try to find one within the federal government, and if we can't do that, we'll look to the private sector," Smith said. "Our bottom line is to get them employed and transition them back to civilian life as quickly and painlessly as possible."The Sept. 20 career fair will provide injured troops as well as military spouses an opportunity to connect directly with recruiting representatives from the Defense Department and other federal agencies, as well as private industry, Smith said.In addition to getting the chance to network with civilian and private-industry recruiters, participants will be able to gather information about job opportunities and learn about the variety of special employment and training programs available to them. The career fair will feature workshops in resume writing and online job-search techniques, Smith said. In addition, demonstrations of workplace computer and electronic devices to accommodate workers with disabilities will be featured, as well as discussions with representatives from special programs developed for injured servicemembers.Among special programs to be represented are the Rehabilitative Assignments Program for Wounded Service Members, the Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program, the Military Severely Injured Center and the Army's Always a Soldier program. The Defense Applicant Assistance Office, Brooke Army Medical Center, the Military Severely Injured Center and Monster.com are jointly sponsoring the event, to be held in the Fort Sam Houston Army Community Service Center. For severely injured servicemembers, hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and for military spouses, 1 to 4 p.m.More than 300 severely injured servicemembers and their spouses attended a similar event in April at Walter Reed. Smith called that event "a resounding success" that resulted in permanent job placements for 25 servicemembers.Plans are under way in the Defense Applicant Assistance Office to hold similar events at various other military medical centers around the country, Smith said. For more information about the Fort Sam Houston event or other DoD-sponsored recruiting events, visit the "Civilians Working for National Defense" Web site or call (888) DOD-4USA (363-4872). DO YOU KNOW A HERO?

Do You Know A Hero?
by Freedom AllianceAugust 23, 2005
Terminal Velocity Video seeks local soldiers, parents & spouses of military for a documentary to benefit children of fallen and disabled U.S. troops.
Do you know a soldier deployed to Iraq – a parent whose son or daughter is serving with U.S. military in Iraq or Kuwait – someone who returned from a tour of duty in the Middle East? Terminal Velocity Video, located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, would like to interview and include the stories of these individuals for a documentary entitled Thank A Soldier to benefit the Freedom Alliance Foundation Scholarship Fund. Freedom Alliance provides scholarships to children whose parents have been killed or permanently disabled from military service.
Bill Kaminski, owner of Terminal Velocity Video says, “the purpose of Thank A Soldier is to encourage support for U.S. Troops and increase awareness of sacrifices made by members of the U.S. Military. Thank A Soldier is about honoring our troops and their families.” Terminal Velocity Video is donating its services in creating the documentary. The video will be sold on DVD with replication costs paid through sponsor donations. All proceeds from sales of Thank A Soldier go to benefit Freedom Alliance.
The “interviews” consist of parents casually and candidly talking about their concerns while supporting their sons and daughters who are serving in the military, soldiers narrating photographs they took with disposable cameras in the Middle East, and spouses talking about how Family Readiness provides support while their partner is overseas. A number of interviews with soldiers who returned from the Middle East have been done using “greenscreen” – like weather reports on TV. The person talking is placed on a virtual set or background with their photos appearing while narrating. Bill Kaminski states, “greenscreen keeps the focus on the interview’s content”.
Terminal Velocity Video is seeking permission to interview recovering troops in military hospitals. “A number of injured troops will spend major portions of their lives trying to recover former abilities, or finding out how much of their abilities they can recover”, says Mr. Kaminski.
A trailer for “Thank A Soldier” is posted on the Terminal Velocity Video website http://www.TerminalVelocityVideo.com and also at http://www.Thank-A-Soldier.net
Thank A Soldier started with interviews of families and coverage of the Support Our Troops rally held in Pennsville, New Jersey, May 21st, (Armed Forces Day) 2005. Tamara Chastain of Pennsville, New Jersey, conceived the idea of creating a DVD about the Pennsville, NJ rally to raise money for Freedom Alliance Foundation. Mr. Kaminski states, “I thought this was a great starting point for an in-depth look at how ordinary people are doing extraordinary things to help support U.S. Troops in Iraq, and how parents and families of U.S. military have been affected.” Tamara Chastain from Pennsville, raised funds for DVD replication and is in charge of Thank A Soldier DVD sales.
Coverage of Support Our Troops rallies, activities supporting U.S. Armed Forces members being deployed & serving overseas, interviews with parents of U.S. Armed Forces personnel serving in Iraq & Kuwait, and interviews with active duty military personnel will be included in the DVD video production.
Terminal Velocity Video "gives back to the community" by promoting organizations and special interest groups that benefit the public; the “Thank A Soldier” video production is this year’s project. Past projects include web movies & pages for the Hunterdon County Raritan River Music Festival, a documentary video for ArtPride NJ covering the Save NJ Arts & History Rally May 14, 2003, and a promotional video for Discovery Church in Voorhees, New Jersey.
Terminal Velocity Video originally started as a company skydiving video production company in 1996 (hence the name Terminal Velocity). Terminal Velocity Video still photos have been featured in the New York Daily News, Parachutist Magazine, and other national publications. Terminal Velocity Video footage has been featured on Fox Television, ABC News, and REAL-TV. Terminal Velocity Video produces corporate, legal, & event video, and creates 2D & 3D animations.

Emergency Relief Fund
For Members of the National Guard
January 1, 2003

Standard Operating Procedures for Administering the Emergency Relief Fund

The EANGUS We Care for America Foundation, Inc. (WCFA) will offer an emergency grant or no-interest loan to any member of the Army and Air National Guard (referred to as "eligible member") who has suffered financial hardship due to mobilization or Katrina and meets the criteria contained below. The assistance will continue to be made available based on availability of funds. In the absence of available funds, requests will be returned to the initiator. Membership in EANGUS is not required for eligibility in this program.

The emergency grant or no-interest loan will be disbursed on a first come, first served basis based on funds availability. Only one grant or loan will be awarded to an eligible member or dual-service family annually. It will be paid directly to a creditor and will not be sent directly to the National Guard member. A grant or loan will not exceed $500 per award unless extraordinary circumstances exist. These circumstances will receive special consideration by the review committee to allow for exceptions for higher amounts.

A permanent committee will be formed. It will be chaired by the EANGUS WCFA Foundation Treasurer and four other members. The four members, appointed by the EANGUS WCFA Foundation President, will have oversight of the operation of the fund and will vote on grants or no interest loan applications. At least one member of the committee will be from the business community; the remaining members will be members of the EANGUS WCFA Foundation Board.

The Emergency Relief Fund will be administered by the National Office of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States (EANGUS) under the direction of the Executive Director.

a. The EANGUS Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the marketing of the emergency relief fund to each State, territory and the District of Columbia to include: The Adjutant General, State Command Sergeant Major, State Command Chief Master Sergeant, State Family Program Coordinator and Wing Family Program Coordinators.

b. The EANGUS Executive Director will develop and implement a one (1) page application form. All States will use this form, with no modifications allowed.

Eligible members will initiate the application for a grant or no interest loan through their Wing or State Family Coordinator, State Command Sergeant Major, State Command Chief Master Sergeant or Adjutant General. The application must be accompanied by an endorsement letter from the Wing or State Family Coordinator, State CSM, State CCM or Adjutant General. Applications without an endorsement letter from one of the above will be returned with no action. Requests for grants or no interest loans may be processed via regular mail or facsimile. If facsimile requests are made, all "hard copy" documents will be forwarded to the EANGUS National Office for proper record keeping prior to the request being approved.
Upon receipt of the grant or no interest loan request (and supporting documents), the EANGUS Executive Director will transmit the request via electronic means to the committee members for voting. All voting will be electronically returned to the EANGUS National Office. Three (3) affirmative responses are required for approval. Upon receipt of the three affirmative responses, the EANGUS Executive Director will issue and mail the check to the creditor or business of designated applicant's requested need. All billing statements and or business points of contact and addresses must be included with the request.

Applications that are denied will be returned to applicant.

The EANGUS National Office goal is to respond to each request within three (3) working days. No commitment should be made to eligible members pending processing from the EANGUS Executive Director.

EMERGENCY FAC MEETING FOR HURRICANE RELIEF

The Woodbury FAC will be having an emergency meeting for any and all volunteers that would like to participate in hurricane relief efforts. Many of us know people that lost everything and many of you have called wanting to help. Bring yur ideas, kind hearts, good spirits and if you can afford to...........checkbooks, lol. If we can pull off a pancake breakfast and get through our own deployments this should be EASY! We need as many people as possible to make this work. Many people have lost everything, their homes, churches and have yet to see a relief worker. Our mission in this meeting is to figure a way to get relief DIRECTLY to those we know. Please, every person will count on this one!

Hurricane Relief

Thanks to everyone that got the word out or dropped off donations to the armories for the relief effort. The armories have STOPPED collecting water but check back soon for ways you can help. We will most likely have a meeting soon to discuss ways the FRGs can get involved and help with this effort since so many of you have called and asked what you can do to help. Thank you again for your generosity.
