Scholarships for Those Serving in Iraq and Afghanistan

New Scholarships Begin for Iraq, Afghanistan Veterans

Former U.S. Ambassador to Spain George Argyros and his wife Julia have founded the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship, beginning with $5 million from their family foundation and matched with $5 million from other donors.
The $5,000 scholarships will be administered by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.
Candidates will need DD-214s showing they have served in the Iraq or Afghanistan theaters since Sept. 2001.
They also must be U.S. citizens or in the process of becoming citizens. In addition, they must intend to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited four-year U.S. school. And they will have to show proof of financial need below a threshold of $50,000 a year in household income. The application deadline for fall 2005 scholarships is Sept. 1.
